Everything you have written, decided, built, and learned is being commoditized into fuel for the AI era. We started Mitosis Labs because we believe your story should stay yours, and that AI should grow its value for you instead of absorbing it.
We get asked this every week, and it is a fair question. Yes, the large AI products can plug into your email, your documents, your calendar. But the connection was never the point. The question that matters is simple: who does your memory belong to after you connect it?
Your Cortex is for your mind, not just your data. It is the living record of how you think: your decisions, your relationships, your taste, the way your business actually works. That record is precious. When you grow it inside someone else’s product, you are building an asset you do not own, on land you do not control.
Mitosis exists so that asset compounds for you. One memory, built from everything you know, that any agent can connect to and get smarter from. Their agents, our agents, or one running on a Mac Mini on your desk. The models will keep changing. Your mind should keep growing through every one of them.
The biggest AI companies are building a simple machine: connect everything, absorb everything, and let the aggregate make their models and their next products better. History has been honest about where that goes. Time and again, companies that handed their data and workflows to a dominant platform watched that platform learn from them, and then compete with them.
If you run a business, your data is your IP. The way you win deals, the way you serve customers, the judgment sitting in ten years of email. That is the company. We built Mitosis so you never have to trade it away to get everything AI has to offer.
Keep your story safe. It is the one thing you have that no model can generate.
They said IBM would own the internet. Then Microsoft, then Google. Then everyone was on Facebook, until Instagram, until TikTok. The lesson is not that giants fall. The lesson is that people with taste keep moving, and the market follows them. The discerning customer decides what everyone uses ten years from now.
The same turnover is coming for AI, and faster. The model you love today will be leapfrogged next year. If your memory lives inside one provider, every switch means starting over as a stranger. We think you deserve better than that.
So we built the neutral layer. Cortex is a third party by design. It works with every model and belongs to none of them. Switch providers, run several at once, move from cloud to local. Your memory keeps compounding through all of it.
Not a cache of files. A living record of how you think and decide, one that gets sharper every time it is used. An asset on your balance sheet, not theirs.
We do not sell models, so we never have a reason to trap you with one. Any agent connects, and every answer traces to a real source. Leave any provider without losing a day of progress.
Private inference means you can put your whole life in, your finances, your health, your doubts, and look at it honestly. Your context never becomes anyone else’s training data.
Somewhere along the way, the industry taught everyone a false trade: if you want what AI offers, hand over your data and accept the terms. We are here to tell you that trade was never necessary.
AI can be good for each of us while we stay in control. That is not a slogan, it is an architecture. Your memory lives in an isolated space you own, with scoped permissions for every agent that touches it. Run it against the frontier models when you want their power. Run it against local, private inference when the material is yours alone. You decide, for every question, what leaves the room.
We run our own company this way. Our sales, our research, our operations, all on the product we sell. Every gap hits us before it ever reaches you.
Alex has spent the last ten years studying collaboration theory and digital economies: how groups of people, markets, and now agents get smarter together. He previously founded and ran a venture-backed company. At Mitosis he carries the big picture, and the belief that intelligence compounds when knowledge is shared on the owner’s terms.
PJ is a former Meta engineer whose code runs in production for millions of people. Inside the biggest labs, he watched the most powerful models in the world get things confidently wrong because nothing grounded them. So he left to build the layer that does. At Mitosis he builds Cortex and everything it touches.
We work out of our AI research lab in San Francisco, building in the open with a community of operators who use what we ship every day. We are a small team that feels more like a family, and everyone who joins us, as a customer, a partner, or a friend, becomes part of that.
We are not here to sell hype. We just believe the most important property line of the next decade is being drawn right now, between your mind and their models. We are building on your side of it, and we would be honored to have you with us.
With love, Alex and PJ · San Francisco
A memory you own only matters if it stays private and provable. These are the people who keep us honest.
End-to-end encrypted, quantum-resistant agent communication.
Security and data architecture for private, owner-controlled memory.
Open knowledge, provenance, and what it means to keep a record honest.
